4-Hour Basic Driver Improvement (BDI)
/ Court-Ordered / TCAC

You can elect to attend a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course for a Florida traffic ticket to keep points off your license, to keep your insurance costs from increasing*, and to obtain an 18% reduction of your civil penalty.

You can also attend this course if you have been ordered by a judge or a court to attend a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course, or if you have received a letter from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) stating that you must attend a Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC).

NOTE: You cannot elect to attend this course if you have already elected for another traffic ticket within the past calendar year, if you have elected five times previously, or if you hold a commercial driver's license (CDL).

4-Hour First Time Driver / Drug and Alcohol Course (START)

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles requires that all first time drivers* complete a 4-hour drug and alcohol course before receiving a Florida driver's license. This course is also sometimes called a "drug and alcohol" course, learner permit course, or "Traffic Law Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE)" course.

*§322.095, §322.08(5), Florida Statutes. Drivers who have already been licensed in another state or in a country that is recognized by DHSMV do not have to complete this course. If you are not sure whether you need to take this course, please contact the Florida DHSMV for more information.



12-Hour Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI)

If you have received a letter from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) notifying you that your driver's license has been suspended or revoked, you will need to complete a 12-hour Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course in order to get your license back. The same holds true if you have been ordered by a judge to complete a 12-hour ADI course, or if you have been designated as a Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO).

8-Hour Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI)

You can take this course if you have been ordered by a judge or by the court to attend an 8-hour Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI) course. NOTE: This course is a longer version of the Basic Driver Improvement course and IS NOT the same as an 8-hour Aggressive Driving course or 8-hour Driving While License Suspended or Revoked (DWLSR) course. If you are not sure which course you need, please call the clerk of the court or other agency that ordered you to attend a course.
